The ceremony held on Saturday, 18th February 2022, was the first of its kind in the month of February.
The ceremony began with the Master of Ceremony, Mr. Christopher Oshiokhue welcoming the Chancellor, Dr. Cecilia Ibru, to constitute the Assembly and officially declare the ceremony open. After that, the Chancellor delivered her welcome address charging the matriculating students to actively run with a vision and be worthy ambassadors of the University.
Dr. Cecilia Ibru further implored them to be challengers of knowledge and retentiveness in this age of tech knowledge. She said all of us, without exception, have innate creative powers for innovation and inventiveness in our present age of Information Technology revolution. As students of this great citadel of learning, you have access to all the necessary facilities to become the next Elon Musk of Tesla, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook.
One of the Guest Speakers at the occasion, an Erudite academician who also doubles as the Director of Academic Planning of the University, Prof. Usunobun Usunomena, spoke on the Power of Education and Knowledge. He charged the matriculating students to be good and worthy ambassadors of the university. He said education provided by MCIU should guide students to develop capabilities and skills. It should offer the opportunity to receive the highest education and training and be ready to take up responsibilities in their various fields of endeavour. He said, “The education we provide you in MCIU today should make you better citizens by teaching you how to conduct yourself through life by following rules and regulations and giving you a sense of conscience.
No matter what, when you are educated, you follow the rules and regulations whether you like them or not. People have been destroyed not because they lack knowledge but because they reject knowledge. Remember, knowledge is power; people want to go to school but don’t want to get knowledge. Knowledge is power, but without action, knowledge is useless. There is no point in being a genius if you don’t put your knowledge into action”.
Erudite academician and Former Vice-Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Prof. MacDonald Idu, charged the students to do their best and constantly make the university proud in their pursuit of excellence. He stated that education is meant to open one’s mind, and discipline comes through education. He said, “as young scholars, you have to discover yourself, keep the right company, and always keep focus. Learn to talk to yourself, renew your mind and tell yourself that you are better than this. The world is waiting for you to shine, we are also waiting for you to shine, but it starts with your attitude. Be proud of your institution and be ready to showcase your institution to the world.
In her opening address, the Vice-Chancellor of MCIU, Prof. Ibiyinka Fuwape, congratulated the new students and their parents for witnessing such a great occasion.
While giving a brief history of the university, she said the university has successfully completed seven academic sessions and graduated 4 sets already. Moreover, the university is working hard to start two new programmes, B.Sc.N Nursing Science and B.MLS Medical Laboratory Science.
She challenged the students that their matriculation is an enlistment to hard work for intellectual development and advised them to be diligent and industrious in their academic pursuits. She urged them to shun vices like examination malpractice, cultism, sexual harassment, and fighting as they attract sanctions that can lead to rustication or expulsion. The university has zero tolerance for cultism and unwholesome behaviour.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. A.O. Muzan, gave the vote of thanks, admonishing parents to continue supporting their children in ensuring they get the best form of education.
The event’s highlight was oath-taking by the matriculating students and closing prayers by the University Admissions Officer, Mrs. Kike Opatayo.
