The Urhobo Arise Group (UA), a non-partisan network of Urhobo intellectuals dedicated to the socio-economic well-being and unity of the Urhobo Nation, provided essential supplies (palliatives) to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Okuama currently residing in the Ewu main town camp.
Olorogun Fidelis Odia and Counsellor Dennis Agori, representing the organization, presented the palliatives which includes a live fat cow to the camp commandant. The donation was well-received, with representatives of distressed yet hopeful Okuama women present. This intervention complements the efforts of the Delta State government in managing the IDP camp.
A key aspect of the presentation involved a heartfelt “Solidarity Letter” from the Urhobo Arise Group. The letter acknowledged the recent Okuama incident (March 14, 2024) and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The group emphasized solidarity with the Okuama people, fellow Nigerians, and the armed forces personnel involved.
Furthermore, Urhobo Arise donated a letter of solidarity and a memorial solidarity board to the camp as a gesture of remembrance.
The Urhobo Arise Group expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government and other well-meaning organizations for their support in establishing the camp and alleviating the suffering of displaced Okuama residents. They reiterated their commitment to partnering with the government and other organizations in rebuilding the Okuama community.
Okuama Camp Leader Expresses Gratitude
The Okuama Camp Commandant, Austin Ohwofaria responded with appreciation for the support provided by the Delta State Governor, Chief Sheriff O.E. Oborevwori, the Urhobo Arise Group, and others. He echoed the longing to return home, stating, “East or West, home is best.” The leader pleaded with the government and stakeholders to facilitate their resettlement in Okuama.
Urhobo Arise Representative Commends Camp Commandant
Olorogun Fidelis Odia and Counsellor Dennis Agori, representing Urhobo Arise, concluded by commending the camp commandant, Deacon Austin Ohwofaria, for his leadership and compassion. He praised Deacon Ohwofaria’s patient demeanor, comparing it to the biblical Moses who readily assisted those in need.
