On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, the social media space was inundated with some very disturbing and appalling video clips and pictures of the unlawful entry and violent conduct by thugs on the premises and teachers of DSC Technical High School (owned and operated by Premium Steel and Mines Ltd – PSML), allegedly hired by a parent seeking reprisal.
The thugs, as we were made to understand by the school authority, forced their way into the school, damaging the school gate in the process and inflicting bodily injuries on some teachers as retaliation for disciplinary measures meted out to a student. It was reported that the student contacted his parents to complain about the punishment he received and the parents decided to get even.
We the Technical High School Old Students Association – THSOSA totally condemn this despicable act. There is no acceptable reason for anyone to sponsor thugs to invade any school. We are aware that the matter was promptly reported to the police and the investigation is currently ongoing the lawyers of PSML are also abreast of the situation.
THSOSA as a body is fully committed to maintaining the standard and reputation of the school and as such, we will ensure that the law takes its full course and justice is done. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Those found wanting must be brought to book to act as a deterrent to anyone who might want to use this dastardly act as a template for redress instead of following civil and laid-down escalation procedures to seek redress.
The Association also calls on parents to constantly embrace dialogue in resolving issues with the school authority that concern them and their ward rather than taking laws into their hands.
The National President has been in touch with the school principal and the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) since the unfortunate incident happened. Also, the National General Secretary of the Association has visited the school to assess the situation and to further engage with the School authority. In the coming days, we will be engaging with the School authority and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) to work out probable solutions that will prevent the recurrence of such ugly events.
THS has been known for its academic excellence and discipline globally which we the Old Students and the hard-working teachers have constantly strived to maintain for forty Years (40 years). We urge the management of PMSL to review the security architecture currently in place in the school with a view to improving the security of students, staff and property as this is fundamental for a conducive learning environment.
The Association acknowledges that these are challenging times in our country Nigeria for everyone and enjoins all to remain calm while efforts are being made to address this incident and prevent a recurrence.
