A major gas plant near Jakpa junction off Warri-Sapele road, Nelmic, went up in flames at about 10.30 pm on Monday night.
At press time firefighters were still battling to extinguish the raging inferno. Unverified claims said some persons may have died.
A resident around the hood who gave his name as Edirin told our correspondent how they saw balls of fire lightening up the dark sky from their houses and what followed was a loud explosion.
It was also gathered that the raging fire was fast spreading to neighbouring residential buildings and a popular church in the area, before the intervention of operatives from the fire service.
But the number of casualties could not yet be ascertained as it was gathered that an unspecified number of persons were feared dead while several others sustained injuries from the fire explosion.
The police public relations officer PPRO for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
